"If someone ever tells me it's a mistake to have hope, well, then, I'll just tell them they're wrong. And I'll keep telling them 'til they believe! No matter how many times it takes."
— Madoka Kaname, Madoka Magica Episode 12.
Madoka Kaname (鹿目 まどか Kaname Madoka) is the titular and main character of Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
Living an ordinary life, Madoka has a loving family and is surrounded by good friends. One day she has a dream of a mysterious girl fighting an ominous creature. The next day, Homura Akemi, the girl from her dream, comes to her class as a transfer student and changes her life.[4]
Appearance
Magical Girl
Personality and Traits
Madoka first appears to be a naive, gentle girl from a kind family. Though sometimes shy, she makes friends without much difficulty and treats others gently and with respect. Madoka's mother, Junko, commented that she has always been a good child and never lies.[5]
She has low self-confidence, and she believes she does not have much to offer the world unless she is helping people, which makes becoming a Magical Girl appealing to her.[6] She has been known to become flustered easily, and in certain circumstances, she can be easily manipulated by others playing on her insecurity and desire to help. As a Magical Girl, she is more obviously confident in herself than before her wish.
Madoka always tries to call other main characters their first names with postfix (-chan or -san) if possible, and boys by their family name with the suffix "-kun". It may indicate that she is eager to get close to others. The only exception is Kyosuke Kamijo. Madoka might think it is not a good idea to get too close to him since she believes he could potentially become Sayaka's boyfriend. This is confirmed in the PSP game, when Madoka finally calls him by his first name, after Sayaka made advances with him in one of the endings.
Madoka often tries to help and understand others, even if it doesn’t end particularly well. She’s anxious, scared, and doesn’t fully understand the whole situation, but she desperately tries her best to do so, like when she quickly stops the mass suicide of H.N. Elly's Witch kissed victims, knowingly putting herself in danger.[7]

A completelly different side of her personality is shown when we see Homura's other timelines. She is shown to be more brave and heoric, working with Mami and being sure of herself. This doesn't come without her usual naivety and kindness, as her wish without Homura's intervening is to save Amy, a cat ran over by a car.[8] This radical alteration is the result of Homura's interference by preventing her from becoming a Magical Girl that caused a role reversal.
She is shown to be a level-headed person, capable of making decisions on her own. She also displayed to be a quick thinker in some crucial moments, like when she kills a panicked Mami Tomoe to prevent her killing Homura Akemi[9], or when she intercepts Sayaka Miki, who was trying to Connect with Mami, after seeing that Yachiyo Nanami's connect failed.[10]
Wish
Because Homura has gone through many timelines, trying desperately to save Madoka[9], Madoka's wish is not the same in every timeline.
From what we know until now, she contracted with Kyubey in order to:
- Timeline 1 ~ 4: “Please, Kyubey! Save it, Amy's life!” (To revive a cat who had just died in front of her after being hit by a car.) The cat's death was caused by the influence of a familiar (Coco). This is her original wish, made without Homura's influence.[11][12][13][14]
- Timeline 5: “I don't want that Witch to fall into despair anymore.” (For Nagisa Momoe to be free from her regrets).[17]
- Timeline 6: To stop Sayaka from "fighting" against Homura and Mabayu Aki (exact wording unknown).[18]
- Timeline 7: “Sign a contract with me... Please save Sayaka-chan!” (To recover Sayaka's Soul Gem after she threw it from a bridge and it got far away from her body). [19]
- Timeline 8: To prevent Sayaka from turning into a Witch (exact wording unknown).[20]
- Timeline 9 ~ 12: Like in the penultimate timeline, to either save Homura from Walpurgisnacht or obtain the power to defeat Walpurgisnacht. Only the last part of her wish is known: "... I will change the future".[21][22][23][24]
- Timeline 13: “Please save Mabayu from despair!”[25]
- Unknown Timelines:
- Penultimate Timeline: To either save Homura from Walpurgisnacht or obtain the power to defeat Walpurgisnacht (exact wording unknown).[9]
- In Scene 0 it's revealed the last part of her wish to be: “... I will change the future”. This seems to be the same wish made by Madoka each time Homura fights Walpurgisnacht on her own, having the same outcome of Madoka turning into a Witch that will destroy the Earth in 10 days.)
- Final Timeline: “I wish... I wish I had the power to erase Witches before they're born. Every single Witch from the past, present, and future, everywhere. I don't care what I become. All the Magical Girls who believed in hope and fought Witches, I don't want them to suffer or cry anymore. I want them to be at peace. And if that goes against the laws of the universe, then I'll just rewrite those laws. That's the only thing I want, it's what I wish for. Now! Grant my wish! Incubator!”[29]
Powers and Abilities

When contracted as a Magical Girl, Madoka has displayed the ability to create arrows of energy to attack with and even fire several at once to attack several enemies. It is also to be noted that the amount of power she has seems to depend on the timeline her incarnation is located in as in earlier timelines she had less potential. The stronger her potential, the more power and damage she is seen to inflict upon her foes.

- She can fire an arrow into the sky onto a huge magical sigil which can fire hundreds of arrows at once.[29]
- She can charge one arrow which will split into several arrows mid-flight. These trigger a series of explosions once they reach their target.[16]
She has also used her bow in creative ways during challenging battles.
- She can use it as a support to descend from ropes, just like in Patricia's labyrinth. Additionally, one more person may hang onto her body to descend with her.[16]
- She can use it to "fire" her teammates instead as a projectile. The person will be thrown at a high speed leaving a pink streak behind and may trigger the explosive power at contact just like her regular arrows.[16]
- While in staff mode, she can throw the bow in a javeline-fashion and pierce the enemy.[Citation needed]
- She can use her bow as a melee weapon.[30]
Madoka's exact main magical ability in Madoka Magica is never shown, thus it is unknown what it actually was. In the timeline Magia Record takes place, it is postulated that Madoka and Iroha Tamaki's magic are very similar[Citation needed]. As Iroha has healing magic, and Madoka is known to have wished to heal Amy in previous timelines, it is highly likely that she possesses healing magic in this and other timelines.
For her powers after making her final wish, see Ultimate Madoka#Powers and Abilities.
History
In Madoka Magica
- After Mami's death, Madoka changed her mind about becoming a magical girl.
- In Episode 6, Junko and Madoka had a conversation on how difficult it is to do the right thing, even when no one is in the wrong (per say). Junko's advice was for Madoka to be on the wrong against her friend to solve the problem, even if it means that her friend would hate her for it.
- Episode 8: Kyubey claimed Madoka's power to be godlike, to the point where she could even change the laws of the universe if she wished for it.
- Episode 10: In the first timeline, Madoka along with Mami saved Homura from a familiar. She died during the fight with Walpurgis Night. In the second timeline, Madoka turned into a witch for the first time, revealing to Homura the link between magical girls and Witches. In a later timeline, Madoka killed Mami in order to save Homura, as Mami lost control of herself and had just killed Kyoko. This is also the timeline in which Madoka asked Homura to go back in time to prevent her from becoming a magical girl. Madoka's power increased exponentially after every timeline. The first time showed she was an ordinary magical girl. In later timeline she had enough power to defeat Walpurgis in one shot, was capable of destroying the entire planet within 10 days in her witch form, and satisfied all Kyubey's energy quotas of the Earth.
- Episode 11: Junko confronts Madoka to stop her from getting into the danger of the storm, Madoka reminds her mother that she is a good girl and never does anything wrong but she tells her she needs to do this, a throwback to their earlier conversation. Madoka knows that what she is doing will worry her family, but she also knows that she must disobey her mother to save her family and her town. This conversation between Junko and Madoka earns her mother's trust. Homura's time repeats had linked multiple parallel universes together with Madoka's fate as their center. With every reset, Homura would force yet another parallel universe to be centered around Madoka. The accumulated karma is the reason why Madoka's potential power is so great. Hearing the revelations from Kyubey regarding the history of Magical Girls, Madoka was deeply hurt and thus wanted to save these girls from despair.
- Episode 12: Madoka wished to erase all witches in every dimension, in every timeline, with her own hands. This created a paradox because Madoka would eventually erase her own witch self, while she must continue to exist and destroy other witches. This paradox resulted in Madoka escaping the bounds of reality and ascending to godhood as Ultimate Madoka. Since Madoka never existed as a human in this new reality, she is no longer remembered by anyone, except for Homura, and Tatsuya for some reason. Sayaka also remembers her after she passes on and becomes a part of the Law of Cycles, as Sayaka confesses to her in episode 12 that she has caused her best friend a lot of trouble; this could be interpreted as Sayaka having learnt of her unfortunate fate of turning into a witch in the other timelines, an outcome which clearly inflicted a great deal of emotional hurt on Madoka.
In Wraith Arc
Because Wraith Arc takes place after Madoka becomes a god and is erased, see Ultimate Madoka#In Wraith Arc.

A mutant Wraith disguises itself in Madoka's form and helps to assist Homura throughout the story, even going so far as to join in the battle against the mutant Wraiths.
In Rebellion
As Ultimate Madoka, she enters Homura's Soul Gem with Sayaka Miki and Nagisa Momoe, which is isolated by Kyubey, who plans on testing Witches and luring the Law of Cycles in. Because of Homura's memory manipulation magic, she completelly forgets her powers and status, believing that she is an ordinary Magical Girl She is reunited with her family, who were also taken into Homura's barrier and had their memories altered.
Along with Sayaka, Kyoko, Mami, and Bebe (a disguised Nagisa), Madoka fights Nightmares, monsters created by Homura's barrier. Kyubey recognizes Madoka as the Law of Cycles but is unable to determine the nature of her powers. He decides to stay close to Madoka, pretending to be a harmless animal-like helper. Eventually Homura appears in her barrier and joins the other Magical Girls.
Homura's journey of realizing the truth brings her into contact and conflict with the other Magical Girls. Madoka comes to Homura and offers to listen to her problems. Homura tries to tell Madoka about her fate of becoming erased, framing it as a dream she had. Madoka tells Homura that it sounds like a bad dream, and reassures Homura that she would never want to go away to a place where she can't see anyone again. This makes Homura believe that Madoka isn't happy being the Law of Cycles, and that she should have stopped Madoka from sacrificing herself. Homura then decides to believe that Madoka is real (having wondered if Madoka was an illusion), and begins to realize that she herself is the Witch.
Homura transforms into her Witch form, Homulilly, and marches to her death. Fortunately, Sayaka and Nagisa have explained everything to the other Magical Girls, and they have a plan to save Homura. Madoka and Nagisa use their magic to attack the ceiling of Homulilly's barrier, while the other Magical Girls, the summoned familiars, and Oktavia hold off Homulilly and her army of familiars. Ultimately, Madoka destroys the ceiling of the barrier, revealing Kyubey's Isolation Field. Madoka then reaches out to Homura's humanity and the two girls combine their powers to destroy the Isolation Field from the inside, completely foiling Kyubey's plan.
With the Isolation Field destroyed, all the Magical Girls reappear in the real world. Madoka's memories and powers return to her and she transforms back into Ultimate Madoka. As she comes down to take Homura's Soul Gem into the Law of Cycles, Homura grabs her hands. Homura's Soul Gem turns black, and then fills with a new color, Madoka starts to struggle is then separated from the Law of Cycles. Homura hugs her and takes her into her new world.
Homura has now become a new existence, which she defines as a demon. She explains that she took a piece of the Law of Cycles, which corresponds to Madoka's existence as a person before she became the Law of Cycles. Homura creates a new world where the Magical Girls can be alive and happy, although she alters their memories to fit with the new world. In this new reality, Madoka believes she has spent three years in America with her family, and they have just moved back to Japan. Madoka transfers into her class from the original reality, reversing her role with Homura's. Homura introduces herself to Madoka and offers to show her around the school. As they walk together, Homura asks Madoka how she feels returning to her hometown. Madoka says it feels familiar, but something feels different.

As the keep walking, Madoka realizes that the thing that feels different is herself. Her eyes glow gold, her yellow hair ribbons untie themselves, and reality changes. Homura grabs onto Madoka and says that Madoka is her true self right now, returning Madoka and reality to normal. Homura asks Madoka if she thinks the world is precious, and if she thinks either laws or desires are more important. Madoka thinks that law is more important, saying that selfishly breaking the law is a bad thing. Homura takes off the hair ribbon she received from Madoka and says that she and Madoka might become enemies someday. She ties the ribbon into Madoka's hair, saying that she doesn't care about being Madoka's enemy as she just wants a world where Madoka can be happy. In one of the final scenes of the movie, Madoka is shown happily unpacking boxes with her family.
In the Drama CDs
Drama CD 1: Memories of You
The reason Madoka became a Magical Girl in the first timeline is to save a cat which had been run over by a car. Madoka also treated Homura very nicely from the beginning, who at that time was being bullied. We also learn that whenever Madoka made a contract and become a Magical Girl, she would act much more confident since it gave her a sense of purpose. Madoka's kindness in this first timeline towards Homura is one of the major reasons why Homura is so drawn to her. Homura's interventions during the course of the anime prevented this change.
Drama CD 2: Sunny Day Life
Madoka used to get good grades, but her duties as a Magical Girl are interfering with her studies. For what is worth, Madoka's grades are still better than Sayaka's.

In The Different Story

"Mami, does that mean to save yourself, you have to give up on all the Magical Girls who aren't your friends...?" - Madoka, The Different Story: Episode 5.
Madoka first appears at the very end of volume 1, waking Mami up in her apartment in order to get her help stop Kyoko and Sayaka's fight. She has not contracted yet in this timeline, but accompanies Mami and Sayaka on their Witch hunts.
Madoka is worried about Sayaka, and always thinks how to help her. She tells Kyousuke about how his wrist was healed with Sayaka's wish. This doesn't help Sayaka in the end, however.
Madoka makes her wish to revive Sayaka and becomes a Magical Girl at the very end of this story, this causes Homura to give up on this timeline. Madoka doesn't know the truth about the magical girl system. She thinks Sayaka was killed by Witches because Homura told her so. Madoka meets Kyoko after being helped by her and Homura. They become friends secretly and tell each other about another side of Sayaka and Mami.
In Kazumi Magica

Madoka's only appearance in Kazumi Magica is a silhouette, shown during Juubey's explanation of the Magical Girl system.
She also makes a single-panel cameo in the extra pages in the first volume of the collected edition.
In Oriko Magica

"How can you act so calm about all this? Why? Why am I the only one you're saving? You've got so much power Homura!!"
"If you plan to let all the others die...then it'd be better if you didn't save me...!" - Madoka, Oriko Magica, Chapter 5.
Madoka first appears in Chapter 3, asking Homura to go home with her, along with Sayaka and Hitomi. She is well protected by Homura and isn't aware of Magical Girl system.
She appears in Chapter 4 for one page. She is shown with her friends Homura, Sayaka and Hitomi going out for snacks after school.
In chapters 5 through 7, Mitakihara Junior High is attacked by Oriko and Kirika. Oriko speaks to the school through the school's broadcast system, and seems to give a threatening look to Madoka as she claims she will defeat a creature of ultimate despair that will descend upon them. As a Witch's barrier forms over the school, Madoka is separated from her friends attacked by familiars. Homura saves her in time, but Madoka demands to know why she does not help the other students. Homura knows she cannot save everyone, and wanted to try to save Madoka anyway. Madoka apologizes as Homura puts her in a protective barrier so familiars cannot attack her and leaves to defeat the perpetrators. Madoka escapes from the protective barrier created by Homura and tries to help Homura with Sayaka and Hitomi. Madoka was Oriko's real target. The white Magical Girl wanted to kill her before she could contract and become a Magical Girl herself, and then the most powerful witch ever. She is killed by Oriko at the very end. Oriko uses a shard of Kirika's witch body to impale Madoka through the torso. Once Oriko dies and the Witch barrier is lifted, Hitomi and Sayaka are seen mourning for Madoka.
In Madoka Magica Portable
Madoka's Route

In Madoka's Route, the story plays out similarly to the anime except from the ending where it acts out like in Episode 8 where Kyubey asks Madoka to make a wish to save Sayaka. Homura does not make it in time to stop Madoka contracting and she resets. There are also a few minor differences. Madoka remembers her dream of Walpurgisnacht and Homura far more vividly and tells her family at breakfast about it but not Sayaka and Hitomi. She is also visibly distraught about the Witch kissed victims - especially Hitomi - after Sayaka defeats H.N. Elly. She encourages Hitomi to pursue her love interest, not realising it's Kyosuke. She encounters Kyosuke's father after Kyosuke tells him to throw away his violin and persuades him otherwise.
Mami's Route

In Mami's Route, Madoka is already a Magical Girl and saves Mami from Charlotte. They decide to team up, with Mami teaching Madoka. It is revealed that Madoka's wish during this route was to save Amy. The route then plays out like Episode 10 with Homura and Madoka growing close.

If Mami calls for Madoka's help with a Witch kissed victim, the two of them fight Gisela together. Mami explains her insecurities about Madoka and Homura growing close and perhaps leaving her out and the two of them manage to talk through her feelings, growing closer because of it. Later, the two of them fight Walpurgisnacht together. Mami sacrifices herself to save Madoka and the route plays out just like Episode 10 where Madoka dies and Homura makes her wish.
If Mami does not call for Madoka's help, she fights Gisela alone. Although she defeats the Witch, she falls into despair, becoming Candeloro. Madoka has to defeat Candeloro but can also die during the fight, causing Homura to make the same wish as if she dies to Walpurgisnacht. Afterwards, Madoka mourns not being able to find a way to turn Candeloro back into Mami.
Sayaka's Route
In Sayaka's Route, Madoka is already a magical girl alongside Mami and Homura still with her glasses. During the route, the three of them intercept a fight between Sayaka and Kyoko. The team were unaware Sayaka was a magical girl and they team up. Later, after Sayaka and Kyoko escape Charlotte's labyrinth, Sayaka discards her Soul Gem, thinking she is worthless as a magical girl. Madoka and Homura find her unconscious and seemingly dead. The two of them go hunting for Sayaka's Soul Gem which ended up in Charlotte's labyrinth.
If her Soul Gem is found, Sayaka fights Walpurgisnacht with Madoka and Homura. The three of them aren't able to defeat Walpurgisnacht but the town is evacuated in time. Both Madoka and Sayaka die and Homura resets.
If Sayaka doesn't meet with Kyoko after regaining her Soul Gem, she falls into despair and turns into Oktavia. The route plays out similar to Episode 9 where Kyoko sacrifices herself to defeat Oktavia. After this, Madoka falls into a deep depression, locking herself in her room. Homura manages to get through to her and they prepare for Walpurgisnacht but it plays out the same way.
If Sayaka's Soul Gem isn't found by Madoka and Homura, Kyoko finds it instead and Sayaka awakens. However, since so much time had passed, Sayaka's body had begun to rot. She unknowingly visits Kyosuke in this state and very quickly falls into despair with the events playing out like the previous path.
Kyoko's Route
In Kyoko's Route, Madoka first plays a vital role when she throws Sayaka's Soul Gem just like in the anime with the same results. Madoka tries to console Sayaka about the new discovery but Sayaka is already torn up about Hitomi telling her about her feelings for Kyosuke. Madoka ponders making a contract with Kyubey but both Sayaka and Kyoko tell her not to. The route then plays out similarly to Episode 9 where Sayaka becomes Oktavia at the train station and Kyoko and Madoka try to turn her back however Homura has already killed Oktavia when they arrive.
If Kyoko's Soul Gem isn't too dark, Madoka manages to stop Kyoko from advancing on Homura and she leaves. Madoka and Kyoko converse in Kyoko's father's church, the two growing closer. Kyoko and Homura attempt to defeat Walpurgisnacht but fail with Madoka contracting and becoming Kriemhild Gretchen.
If Kyoko's Soul Gem is too dark after Homura kills Oktavia, she transforms into her Witch, Ophelia, which Homura kills. Madoka becomes depressed after both Sayaka and Kyoko were killed in such a short time and tries to visit Homura. Homura continues to tell her not to contract and also asks her not to visit her anymore. Walpurgisnacht comes and the events play out similarly to any failed timeline.
Homura's Route
In Homura's Route, Madoka and Sayaka are called by Kyubey to help just like in the anime.
If Homura chooses to capture Kyubey, Homura tells the two of them to leave as she defeats Gertrud in the abandoned building. The next day Kyubey explains Magical Girls to the two girls, explaining that Homura is a Magical Girl herself. Homura however soon arrives, sending Kyubey away and warning that becoming a magical girl means giving up on everything else except your wish. Later in the evening, Homura visits Madoka's home to warn her further. Just like in the anime, Mami suggests to Madoka and Sayaka that they join her on a witch hunt to understand magical girls but differently, Homura stops this idea. That night, Homura meets Madoka and Sayaka on the street and has dinner with them. Homura, in her own words, tells them about magical girls. She also tells them that she became a magical girl to save an important friend. If Homura instead chooses to kill Kyubey on the first day, another Kyubey merely appears and approaches Madoka similarly to the anime.
Homura has to stop Sayaka from contracting. If Homura asks Madoka to deal with it she visits her home. Although Madoka is busy when Homura visits, she promises to contact Sayaka. Despite both their best efforts, Sayaka contracts anyway. Madoka is surprised and concerned but Sayaka states that she is confident with her decision. If Homura instead decides to stop Sayaka contracting herself, Sayaka refuses Kyubey's offer realising there may be another way to help Kyosuke. The next day Homura finds Hitomi and Madoka along with people affected by a witch's kiss attempting to commit mass suicide. Homura defeats the witch after asking Madoka to leave. Later, Homura stops Kyosuke from committing suicide and decides its best to look after Sayaka. She can either look after her herself or ask Madoka. If Homura looks after Sayaka herself she will contract.
If Sayaka has contracted, Kyubey begins to approach Madoka to usher her into becoming a magical girl to aid Sayaka. Homura continues to stop Kyubey's efforts. Madoka is worried about Sayaka and Homura meets her to talk. Their talk is similar to what occurs in episode five; however, this time, Homura promises to take care of Sayaka and Mami, warning Madoka once again not to make a contract. Later, Homura finds the barrier of the Albertine's familiars, and discovers Sayaka and Kyoko fighting inside. Even worse, Madoka is also present, so she goes to separate them. She then asks Madoka to bring the hurt Sayaka away and consults Kyoko on what to do next. Kyoko says she has no interest in fighting familiars so she leaves everything to Homura. The next evening, Homura finds Madoka coming to her for help. Kyoko and Sayaka are fighting on the overpass. Homura requests Kyoko fight her instead. Kyoko thinks it almost impossible to win, so she pretends to give up. However, she strikes Sayaka's Soul Gem when Homura is off guard. Sayaka's Soul Gem drops onto a truck, continuing the story as per the anime. If Mami is alive, instead, her Soul Gem is knocked away. The next day, Hitomi confesses her feelings to Sayaka with both Madoka and Homura trying to console her but Sayaka insists on being left alone. Homura finds Madoka having an argument with Hitomi. Hitomi refuses Madoka's suggestions and leaves. Madoka wonders if Sayaka won't listen to her because she isn't a magical girl. Homura says that Sayaka wouldn't listen even if she were, and counsels that they just keep watch for now. Later, Sayaka is missing with nobody knowing where she is and her Soul Gem in a darkened state.
If Homura goes to search for Sayaka with Kyoko, Sayaka is found easily and the four magical girls plan for Walpurgisnacht. Kyubey comes to Madoka's house and tells her the history of magical girls and witches and the theory of energy transformation. Madoka visits Homura because she is worried about her and the other girls. Homura acts the same way as she did in the anime, hugging Madoka and confessing her true identity. Walpurgisnacht comes to Mitakihara and all of the magical girls are ready to fight. Madoka is with them, wishing to be of help. Homura then tells Madoka and everyone else that the very person she wishes to save and who she made her contract for is Madoka. Everything is meaningless for Homura if something bad happens to Madoka. Madoka agrees to leave, consoling herself by praying for the girls' safety. The fight against Walpurgisnacht begins. After Walpurgisnacht is defeated, Madoka meets up with the others and is dismayed to see everyone badly wounded. Homura reassures her that magic can heal them all. Sometime later, on the way to school, Sayaka mentions that the number of witches has greatly declined of late. Madoka worries that this might lead to a lack of Grief Seeds, but Homura has ensured that the girls have plenty stockpiled: since they won't have to use their magic to fight Witches, the Grief Seeds that are left will last them a long time. Mami holds a tea party, claiming it is going to be an operational meeting. Everyone goes to Mami's tea party and Sayaka forces Kyoko to put on one of Mami's spare school uniforms. The scenario ends with a picture of the girls having their tea party, with the line 'This is my prayer, my wish...' written in English appearing on the screen.
If Homura goes to search for Sayaka with Madoka, the two of them search at a resteraunt where they meet Kyousuke and Hitomi hand in hand. Madoka congratulates them and leaves, upset that Kyousuke doesn't know Sayaka's feelings for him. Homura replies that a magical girl should not expect a reward. The next day, Homura finds Sayaka, who has just finished fighting familiars. Sayaka refuses Homura's offer of a Grief Seed, and she critizes Madoka for not understanding her (as in episode eight). She then runs away, and Homura knows that it is impossible to rescue her.
If Homura goes to search for Sayaka with Mami they find her in the park. This route gives a similar result as if Homura searched with Madoka. Sayaka falls into despair, becoming Oktavia. Homura can either kill the Witch immediately or tell the other girls the truth about Witches.
If Homura decides to kill Oktavia, she tells the others that Sayaka is already dead, with Oktavia killing her and that they must avenge her. Madoka arrives once Oktavia is dead. Homura tells Madoka to remember the pain she feels upon hearing of Sayaka's death, so that she should never think about becoming a magical girl again. The next day, Madoka and Homura are walking together to school, and they see Hitomi asking if Sayaka has appeared today. They don't tell her that she is gone. Madoka, Homura, Mami and Kyoko hold a funeral for Sayaka. Since Madoka can't say goodbye to Sayaka, Mami suggests they make new resolutions for the future. Some time later, Kyubey comes to Madoka's room to tell her that Sayaka had become a witch, and so too will the other magical girls. Madoka doesn't understand it, so she goes to Homura. Homura explains that Kyubey is an Incubator, an alien with inhuman codes of morality. She then explains what Kyubey should have said to Madoka. Homura says she only hopes to change Madoka's fate and breaks into tears as in episode eleven. After Madoka leaves, Kyubey comes to tell Homura why Madoka can become such an extraordinary magical girl. This route ends with the girls being unable to defeat Walpurgisnacht and Madoka contracting.
If Homura tells them the truth about Witches they leave Oktavia's barrier. Madoka arrives with Homura still holding Sayaka's body so she has to tell her the truth as well. Madoak runs away, unable to face the situation. After this, Homura can either kill Oktavia herself or follow Madoka and Kyoko into her barrier.

If Homura decides to kill Oktavia herself, Kyoko is furious and wants to kill Homura for destroying her last hope of saving Sayaka but Madoka stops her, saying it won't bring Sayaka back to life. Kyoko cuts all ties with Homura then and there, saying she never wants to see her again before leaving. The next day, Madoka asks why Homura killed Sayaka. Homura explains that it was impossible to bring Sayaka back and that Kyoko would have just put Madoka in danger for no reason. They have the same meeting as in episode 11. When Walpurgisnacht comes, Madoka comes to Homura. Homura asks her to go to the refuge, but Madoka says she doesn't want to forget her time spent with Homura; that she doesn't want the happiness of an ordinary girl. Homura replies that Madoka is her only hope, so she has to survive. Homura finally defeats Walpurgisnacht and ends up dying to save Madoka. After her last words Kyubey remarks that, although Homura stopped his plans this time, he need only wait until another crisis strikes Mitakihara.
If Homura instead follows the two girls she interferes before Oktavia attacks Madoka. With no other choice, she kills Oktavia. She tells the two that Sayaka's Soul Gem didn't emerge and Kyoko leaves, distraught. Madoka reminds Homura that Mami is shocked, too, so they go to Mami's place. Since she isn't at home, Madoka thinks she must be in the park. When they arrive at the park, they see Mami preparing to commit suicide. Madoka stops her, and Homura reassures Mami that she can always call on her fellow magical girls. They still have a mission: to defeat Walpurgisnacht and protect the people of Mitakihara. Finally Mami is convinced and agrees to prepare for Walpurgisnacht. This route ends with Madoka making a contract.
If Sayaka doesn't contract, Hitomi offers Kyosuke help from a doctor her father knows who has helped an injured musician before. Sayaka realises her feelings for Kyosuke and tells him with him accepting her confession. Now that Sayaka and Kyosuke are together, Madoka grows lonely so one day visits the music store with Homura. Madoka tells Homura that she feels like they have met somewhere before, and recently she has seen Homura in her dreams. Homura answers that they hadn't met one another until she transferred into Mitakihara Middle School. Homura keeps a distance between herself and Madoka, so as not to let Madoka grow attached enough to her to make a contract for her. Several days later, however, Kyoko tells Homura that Kyubey had told her that Madoka has vast potential as a Magical Girl. Homura interrupts, saying she won't allow Madoka to become a magical girl. Kyoko finally knows the person Homura wants to protect is Madoka. She tells Homura that it is useless for her to convince Madoka not to make a contract. Madoka invites Homura to her home for dinner. Although Homura originally thinks it is a bad idea, she is finally convinced and eats dinner with the Kaname family. After dinner, Madoka tells Homura that she is welcome to come and visit her any time. Homura thinks this will be okay, after she defeats Walpurgisnacht. By now, Kyubey is anxious because Madoka seems to have no interest in making a contract. As such, he decides to tell everything to her. As in the anime, Madoka visits Homura's house afterwards. Homura defeats Walpurgisnacht and Madoka never contracts.
Bonus Route
In the Bonus Route Homura strives to help each girl individually. Madoka sees how everyone has changed themselves and she is worried about herself. However, she doesn't know how she should change. Homura comes to her room and slaps her after Madoka talks about how useless she feels. Homura requests that Madoka not change herself.

Madoka and Homura Akemi arrive in Kamihama City. They decide to go to a shrine Madoka saw in a magazine. However, the two are stopped when they sense a witch. The girls head into the barrier and find a magical girl fighting it. Before they can help, the witch escapes and the barrier vanishes. Madoka and Homura go up to the girl and asks if she's alright. The girl says not to worry and leaves. Madoka apologizes to Homura and runs off to look for the magical girl. Elsewhere, the magical girl feels tired as she used too much magic. Madoka appears and tells her to rest, offering to take her to a bench. Madoka offers to buy the girl a drink. She asks for iced tea, which prompts Homura to appear and offer to buy it. Homura says she'll gladly do it for Madoka. The magical girl thanks Madoka for helping her, and introduces herself as Shizuku Hozumi. She asks why Madoka came to help. Madoka says it's because Shizuku looked like she was in pain and that she randomly decided to help. Shizuku says Madoka is a kind persona and tells her not to worry. Madoka says it's bad to be alone, since if you're alone there's no one who can help you bear painful things. Shizuku says it's fine even if she's alone, and she'll find a place where she'll belong. Madoka says that as things are, it will always remain painful. Shizuku says that Madoka is trying to help her even if she's a stranger. Madoka humbly dismisses Shizuku's compliments, and then realizes Shizuku herself could create her own place to belong. Homura then returns with drinks. Afterward, Shizuku asks Madoka why she became a magical girl. Madoka says she wants to be useful to someone, as she doesn't have a subject or talent she's good at. She became a magical girl to change that about herself, and that's why she was glad to help Shizuku. Shizuku thinks that Madoka made a place where she belonged by becoming a magical girl, and thinks she could do the same someday. She then thanks Madoka for giving her hope and leaves. Madoka thinks she's lucky to fight alongside the people that are important to her, and goes off with Homura. Madoka makes an offering to a shrine, praying for everyone's happiness, health, and the ability for her to protect everyone. It then starts raining, leaving Madoka wet when it stops. A girl offers Madoka a handkerchief and explains they just missed the bus. Madoka notices the girl has a book called "Waltz of the Maneki-neko", which is a book she likes. The other girl admits it's her favorite book. Madoka introduces herself to the girl, who says her name is Kako Natsume. The two spend the time talking about the book, eventually going their separate ways. Madoka goes to a bookstore at the shopping mall and buys "Tango of the Maneki-neko", the sequel to the book she talked about with Kako. Kako herself is in the bookstore, to Madoka's surprise. Kako asks Madoka if she's a magical girl, saying she saw Madoka's Soul Gem ring. She reveals she is one as well. Madoka thinks this must be the Maneki-neko's work. Later, Kako invites Madoka to come on a night-time adventure at her school. The next week, Kako and Madoka meet at the school, preparing to go to the roof. As they try to go inside, the girls are startled by a cat. Kako says they can't seem to enter the school, so instead she suggests transforming and using their powers to hop to the roof. Once there, Kako tells Madoka to look up at the starry sky. Kako explains that on this day of the year "you can see the most beautiful stars". She says she learned that from "Waltz of the Maneki-neko". Kako claims the school rooftop is the best place to watch the stars. Madoka thanks Kako. Kako admits she's shy and has trouble talking to people, but somehow she can talk properly to Madoka. Kako says this star viewing is her thanks. Madoka says that Kako's honest feelings got through to her. The girls affirm their friendship. Sometime later, Madoka and Mami Tomoe fight a witch. Madoka sees a normal person was kidnapped by the witch and brought into her barrier. Mami tells Madoka to bring the person out of there while she handles the witch. A magical girl appears and says she's impressed that Madoka's helping people. She introduces herself as Sasara Minagi, "the 'knight' who protects this city". Sasara says to be precise she's a knight that protects everyone, and asks Madoka to leave saving the victim to her. She points out Madoka can then go help her own friend fight the witch. Madoka agrees and returns to help Mami. Together, they defeat the witch. The barrier vanishes and the duo meet Sasara outside. Sasara says she brought the victim to the hospital. Madoka thanks her, and Sasara says her and Mami are quite strong. Sasara says they can call her if they're in trouble. She says that rescuing people is her specialty, and wonders if it would be easier to say she's a magical girl rescue worker. She says that protecting everyone is her creed, though admits that when she says it like that, it's embarrassing. Madoka says she's cool. Sasara says she happy to meet magical girls like Mami and Madoka. She explains that with Kamihama having more witches, more magical girls have come to fight them - but they only care about fighting witches, not saving people. Sasara says she wanted to become a knight because she can't accept people being sacrificed in the process of defeating witches. Mami agrees with Sasara's opinion. Sasara admits she knew there were people who thought the same way, but almost never met any. Madoka says she became a magical girl to help people and says she's like Sasara herself. Sasara says Madoka is an incredible magical girl. Mami says Madoka might be the strongest magical girl someday...but she has a long way to go. Sasara says both girls are worthy of taking the title of "knight". When Mami points out they use projectile weapons, Sasara says they can be a rescue team. She offers to team up with them, but Madoka and Mami point out they're not always in Kamihama. Madoka offers to help Sasara if she's in trouble and they're in Kamihama. Sasara thanks them and departs. Afterward, Mami says that Madoka is too kind and too honest. She wonders if Madoka is walking a path of battle. Madoka points out Mami is walking the same path. She says she aspired to be like Mami, who is her ideal magical girl. Mami thanks Madoka but tells her if she's truly in danger it's better to run away. Madoka says it's fine, because she doesn't have the courage to sacrifice herself. Mami invites Madoka for tea once they return to Mitakihara. Madoka narrates how she wants to protect everyone with her own power. |

Madoka, Homura, and Sayaka arrive in Kamihama City to go shopping for Christmas. Homura and Sayaka notice that Madoka doesn't bring her coat and they are scared, because they think that she forgot her coat on the train. Madoka clarifies that she is actually a little hot and she only brought her scarf because of that, but Homura and Sayaka warn her that it will be cold at night. The girls walk through the shops in Kamihama and are amazed by the lights once it gets dark, so they decide to go to a park to observe the stars, although Madoka begins to feel cold and thinks that Homura and Sayaka were right about the coat. Sayaka and Homura notice that Madoka is cold, and Homura offers to give her coat to Madoka, but she refuses. Sayaka hugs Madoka from the side and takes Homura by her arm, so that both the three girls end up hugging with Madoka being in the middle. Madoka and Homura blush at this as Sayaka says that between her and Homura they can warm Madoka up with their coats and that it was better this way because Madoka was too stubborn to accept the coats of any of them. Sayaka later tells Madoka to play a childhood game, Oshikura Manju, while the three of them still embrace, and the two proceed to teach Homura the game. Madoka is happy because, despite being wrong, she can play a game from her childhood with her two best friends.
While watching evening fireworks on the beach, Madoka and company run into some other magical girls and decide to watch fireworks together. Madoka, Ren Isuzu and Kyoko Sakura pick out fireworks. Madoka then goes over to Homura and asks if she's tired. Homura says she never thought she would set fireworks with so many people, and says she's very happy. Madoka agrees, and says she wishes it could last forever. Madoka then says that eventually the fireworks will run out and they'll be too tired to play, so they should all enjoy the present. Homura agrees. Elsewhere, Hinano Miyako scolds Emiri Kisaki for pointing fireworks at other people. Emiri says they have too much energy and accidentally let's one off. The firework nearly hits Sayaka Miki. Mami runs over to see if she's okay. Madoka and Homura chuckle on seeing this. Madoka says they should set off their own fireworks and proceed to do so. The girls say the fireworks are pretty.
Madoka and Sayaka have their first sleepover at Madoka's house. Both girls are excited because it has been a long time since their last sleepover. Sayaka is sad that Hitomi and Homura couldn't go to the party, but Madoka tells her that the two of them had homework, which makes Sayaka sad, but Madoka tells her that next time the four of them will have a sleepover together. Madoka says to start the sleepover, but realizes that she doesn't know what things are normally done at a sleepover, so Sayaka suggests looking at the things in Madoka's room, asking for photos of Madoka when she was little, but Madoka blushes and says It's too embarrassing to show that to Sayaka. The two girls play card games, but Sayaka defeats Madoka each time, but Sayaka mentions her speed and how Madoka in the game thinks before throwing her moves. Madoka excitedly says that now she wants to play cards with the rest of her magical girl group and proposes that they have a sleepover with the five of them. At that moment Junko Kaname, Madoka's mother, arrives home, being greeted by Madoka's father, Tomohisa Kaname. Tomohisa gives Junko water because she came home drunk again while she says how much she loves him. Madoka excitedly says that her mother returned from work, Sayaka insists on greeting her, but Madoka tells her that it is not necessary because she told her the day before that Sayaka would go to a sleepover at her house, and she believes that since she is a little drunk at that moment, her mother wouldn't stop hugging Sayaka. Madoka then remembers that her mother told her something about their teacher, Kazuko Saotome. After telling the story the two don't stop laughing and Sayaka says that it's been a while since the two of them laughed like that together, while Madoka says that she wishes Homura, Mami and their other friends were there. Sayaka thinks that with Nagisa and Kyoko there would be a lot of noise but she thinks it would be a lot of fun, so Madoka suggests that Sayaka to have a sleepover for everyone, and even invite Iroha and her other friends from Mikazuki Village, but Sayaka doesn't think that everyone can fit in Madoka's room... |

|
It's the start of winter break in Mitakihara City. Madoka, Sayaka Miki and Homura Akemi leave from their school's closing ceremony. Sayaka's happy it's over, and Madoka's excited. Homura thinks she'll be lonely since she won't be able to see the others. Sayaka says Homura says cute things and ruffles her hair. She then points out they can still see each other even when it's winter break, whether through hunting witches or hanging out. Madoka says Sayaka is right and that she wants to have fun with everyone. Madoka suggests they go to Mizuna Shrine in Kamihama City for New Years. Madoka says that the shrine is giving out "Ultimate Fortunes". Sayaka says she's interested, but made other plans for New Year's. Homura says she can go. Sayaka tells the two to have fun on New Year's. Sayaka then leaves to look at a store that sells rare classical CDs, and wishes the girls a happy new year. Madoka then asks Homura if she has formal clothes. When Homura says she does, she asks Homura if she knows how to put them on properly. Homura says she doesn't. Madoka says that she was in the shopping district a little while ago. She found a store selling formal clothes, which gave her the idea of dressing up with Homura and Sayaka on New Year's. She then saw a flyer, advertising a kimono dressing class. She tells Homura that the class takes place at a neighbor's house and invites her to attend. Homura is silent for a moment, but agrees. Madoka says she's happy because she didn't have the courage to go alone. Homura says she might not be able to do it well, but Madoka says it's her first time too. At the class, the instructor dresses them in the outfits. Madoka thinks she almost looks like a different person, while she thinks Homura looks beautiful. Homura blushingly admits Madoka is cute. The girls say they're looking forward to New Year's. The girls then begin their lesson, but Madoka turns out to be bad at it, to the point where she trips over the clothes when putting in on. On the other hand, Homura is able to learn how to put the clothing on by herself. The instructor tells Homura she shouldn't have any problems. Madoka thinks she'll never learn herself. The instructor tells Madoka to take a break, and get some fresh air. Homura tries to go with Madoka, but the instructor keeps her to do one last review. Outside, Madoka mopes about how useless she feels. Suddenly Sayaka appears. She tells Madoka she was on her way to pick up a CD and asks what happened. After Madoka explains, Sayaka asks why Madoka thought she wanted to wear formal clothing in the first place. Sayaka asks Madoka why she wanted to take the dressing class. Madoka says it's because she thought it would be fun to celebrate New Year's in formal wear. Sayaka points out Madoka is gloomy, and Madoka says it's because she's failing at the class. Sayaka asks if Madoka has forgotten her goal, and asks why she wanted to celebrate New Year's in the first place. Madoka says it's because she wanted to have fun. Sayaka says it's then fine even if Madoka messes up, because she'll still have her memories. She tells Madoka not to think about it too hard. Madoka agrees, and says she'll give it another try. Suddenly Homura arrives, still wearing her formal wear. She says she got worried when Madoka was late. Sayaka compliments Homura on her clothes, and says Madoka's gloomy face must have worried her. She then bids the girls good-bye. Madoka thanks Sayaka, and Sayaka says they'll be even if Madoka sends her New Year's photographs. After Sayaka leaves, Madoka says that she wanted to have fun with Homura at New Year's but because she got all gloomy it wasn't fun for either of them. Madoka says she'll try harder for the sake of making fun memories, which Homura agrees with. Back in the class, Madoka trips on her clothes again. Thinking about Sayaka, she tries again and eventually succeeds. However, the instructor points out that they've only had one day of practice, and during New Year's they'll be moving around and doing things. The instructor says that they won't know whether they're wearing the clothing out of shape. Both Madoka and Homura admit that would be embarrassing. Later, on New Year's Day, Madoka gets her formal wear put on for her at a store. Homura then runs up to Madoka, revealing that she had her clothing put on at a store too. She says the class was interesting but wasn't very useful. Madoka agrees and says all they have are the memories. She says she has to thank Sayaka properly, and so they'll have to take lots of pictures to show to her later. Madoka and Homura wish each other a happy New Year, and go to pull fortunes at Mizuna Shrine. Madoka narrates that she'll be happy if everyone has a lucky new year. |

|
The following is a summary posted on 4chan's /pmmm/ general. Iroha travels to Madoka's city of Mitakihara to buy gifts for Yachiyo to give her manager, who helped her greatly through her carreer. Since Yachiyo is too busy, Iroha is doing it for her. There, she met up with Madoka by chance and they had a great time chatting and catching up. Madoka guides Iroha to the shop, and they have a chance meeting with Madoka's family. After purchasing the famed sweets for Yachiyo's manager and Mikazuki Manor, Iroha accepts Madoka's offer and goes over to her place, playing with Madoka's little brother and then they have girl talk until late at night. Iroha notices the time and heads back, with Madoka accompanying her to the station, but then realizes the train has malfunctioned, making her stuck. Seeing how Iroha is unwilling to trouble Madoka again after spending the whole afternoon there, Madoka calls Mami and explains the situation, and PMHQ decides to meet up to eat together. After a brief meal, Mami suggests that they should have a pajama party over at her place, making Iroha feel more comfortable since she is not giving trouble to Mami as it is a party. She offers to cook in return with Madoka as her helper. Everyone agrees. Iroha cooked up a great feast as PMHQ agreed and it was wonderful, everyone wanting second helpings as Kyoko wolfs down her food while singing praises. After the meal, Mami serves her handmade pudding and poundcake as desserts, and the girls have a great time as they begin chatting on various topics, including how they are dealing with the Witches that have traveled to the city via a branch of the Mirror Witch. It is then they detect the presence of such a Witch. They enter the branch mirror, dealing with the powerful familiars, but Iroha and Madoka are knocked into a mirror after an ambush caught the whole team by surprise. In this world, Mami, Sayaka and Kyouko are a team, but there is no Madoka in this world, and she is too afraid to call home. For Iroha, she realizes Felicia and Sana cannot be contacted, and she begins fearing the worst when she learns Yachiyo is still wearing her ice mask and stays aloof as Tsuruno desperately tries to reconnect. As for this world's Iroha, our Iroha learnt from her devastated mother, who thought Iroha was pulling some kind of cruel prank, that she died in a car accident, and Ui has succumbed to her illness. The two realized that it is a miracle that they are alive and became friends, wanting to return back to their world, wanting to protect and treasure it even more. They find the mirror and return back to their world, reuniting with the rest of PMHQ. After dealing with the problem, they realize it is already sunrise, and both Iroha and Madoka are eager to return home as their desire to treasure and protect their world has been reaffirmed and would love their world even more than before. |

Its form is salvation.
The master of this emotion is en route to a summer resort, her heart aflutter at the thought of all the rare experiences that one can only enjoy during this brief window. This has affected her Doppel’s appearance as well, but because its master struggles to visualize what the resort will actually be like, the Doppel’s body has transformed into a serving of special fruit ice cream. Everything in the vicinity that this Doppel absorbs will be bathed fairly and evenly in cold syrup and fruit. Though they experience freezing cold as a result, it’s said that enduring the cold will lead to both salvation, and the ability to exalt the glories of any summer one could have. Throughout this, the emotion’s master dreams of eating delicious fruit ice cream as she sleeps.

Side Story
| Madoka Kaname's (Swimsuit) Side Story |
|---|
|
As Madoka begins her summer vacation on an oceanside resort (heavily implied to be in Okinawa), she reflects on a mission her mother has tasked her with: to do something on this trip she can only do now. When she'd asked her mom where to start, her mom suggested she start by getting a new swimsuit, and to take things from there, which has led Madoka to this resort with her Mitakihara friends. She leaves the hotel to meet them, spotting an old woman's hat blowing into the sea. Madoka transforms into her swimsuit form so she can quickly rescue the hat; thankfully, the granny didn't see the whole thing and just assumes Madoka had her swimsuit on beneath her clothes, which makes Madoka's life much easier. The granny remarks that she was gifted that hat by her daughter, "Himari," and warmly thanks Madoka for her kindness before going her own separate way. Madoka is chuffed by her good deed, then runs off to find her friends. Once together, Nagisa wants to dive right into the ocean; Mami says "After we do our warm-ups!" Meanwhile, with everyone in their swimsuit forms, Kyoko challenges Sayaka to a swimming race. Sayaka wonders since when Kyoko got so good at swimming; Kyoko explains how Coordination gives her that skill in this form (and Sayaka grumbles that "You really need to be able to swim on your own, though..."). Above the squabbling, though, Madoka and Homura decide to float in the water together and enjoy a day of contentment. After they swim, Nagisa's next mission is to make a giant sandcastle, insisting she builds it on a spot on the beach with a perfect view...and the perfect place for the castle to get swept away by waves, Kyoko warns. But Nagisa wants to do it anyway, so they all help her make it - and, of course, it's destroyed in the end. Nagisa is crushed, but Mami assures her they can make it again later. From here, everyone splits into new activities - Homura and Sayaka are off to hunt for souvenirs, Kyoko's heading to the arcade, and Mami and Nagisa are going out for ice cream. Madoka goes alone for a walk on the beach, mulling her mother's words and struggling over what to do. So caught up in her reverie, she whams straight into a woman holding a camera. After apologizing, it comes out eventually that the woman is a professional photographer, Madoka's hairstyle in this form is just like how the photographer used to do her own hair. And that brings them to the photographer's purpose: to reminiscence about the good old days, which prompts Madoka to talk with her about what her mom asked her to do. Hearing the whole story, the photographer agrees that Madoka needs to enjoy her days to the fullest so she can live without regrets, and explains that often, you don't realize the things "you can only do now" until the time has already passed, long after you did those things or didn't. Still, Madoka flounders without a specific direction...so the photographer says she knows of one thing that can only be done in this region: observe a night-blooming barringtonia plant. Every year, these flowers bloom for just a fleeting moment in time. Madoka expects finding such an extraordinary plant will be hard task, but the photographer says not so - the resort hosts an event called the "Memory Photo Rally;" those who complete it get tickets to a free tour showing off these barringtonias. That's part of why the photographer has her camera, in fact (her career specialization is in plant photography) - and Madoka decides she'll get her friends to join the hunt, too. With the time for Madoka to meet up with them again coming up, she bids farewell to the photographer and runs off to start convincing them. Once together, Madoka explains the premise to everyone: running under a time limit, they all take group photos at every checkpoint listed on a flyer, which gives only hints and sample photos of where each location is. The girls are all for it; they were just debating about what they'd do next. But Homura points out they'd best hurry - the deadline for the hunt is this evening, and a lot of people are participating. Luckily, the first checkpoint is one they recognize - it's where they built Nagisa's sandcastle! The girls feel more heartened that they can complete the quest, and hurry to their first stop. Fortunately, Mami was prudent enough to bring a selfie stick, and gets to snapping photos of them all at the destination. One by one, they check off each location. Eventually, though, Nagisa gets antsy to play at the beach more, and Homura is getting overheated, too, so they take a break for shaved ice. Sayaka has to break it to Nagisa that shaved ice shops don't serve cheese on ice, and the poor thing is crestfallen. Feeling refreshed, they complete more of their journey, leaving just a sunflower field for last - but the girls have no luck in finding it, and the deadline is looming nigh. The girls decide to split into teams of two and scatter. The teams, decided by rock-paper-scissors, are Mami and Kyoko, Nagisa and Homura, and Sayaka and Madoka. After more scouring, the last pair find the sunflower field hidden behind an old lighthouse, and bask in triumph. As they wait to meet with the others, Madoka spots the photographer taking photos, and runs off to thank her for suggesting the rally. Madoka and the photographer play catchup; the photographer needs just one more photo to get her ticket, but wants to linger here for a little while longer - because this place has her most cherished memories of an old friend - but Madoka silently observes that, for cherished memories, the woman looks so sad... The photographer explains that one summer, and one summer only, as a little girl, she'd met another girl here. The two were kindred spirits, with both loving plants in equal measure. They spent their days on the island searching for all the flowers they could find. On her last day of vacation, the photographer and the friend promised they would meet one last time to visit a special hidden location they both loved together. But then, the day before their appointment, being the kids they are, they got into a petty squabble, and her friend never showed up at the meeting place the next day. The photographer and her family returned for vacation the next year, where she learned the terrible, awful truth: her friend was dead. Her friend wasn't on vacation like the photographer was led to believe, but had actually lived on the island in a sanatorium. The friend had been very ill, and was moved to a big hospital at the end of the prior summer, where she passed away. Ever since then, for every day of her life, the photographer has lived with regret over how their friendship ended. So often, the photographer has to go abroad for work, and hasn't visited nor will be able to return to the island for a long time. She came this year as one last hurrah - because while this is a place of bitter memories, it's also a place with sweet ones, too, and both are important to her. Madoka absorbs this story in silence as the photographer expresses hope that Madoka leaves this island with only good memories. And Madoka says she's well on her way with that one, thanks to the photo rally the photographer suggested. The photographer reminds Madoka to find those things she can only do now - and speak of the devil, she gets a call from Sayaka saying the others are starting to convene on the sunflower field, and they're getting ready to take that photo together, so Madoka runs back to find them. Once Madoka arrives, she finds that while Kyoko and Mami are there, Homura and Nagisa have gotten lost on their way to the lighthouse. While they all fret over whether to go ahead without the pair or not, Homura and Nagisa find someone to help guide them: the granny whose hat Madoka rescued that morning! The favor repaid, they all take the photo they need. Homura is excited to see the night-blooming flowers, and Madoka, too, can't wait for nightfall. That night, however, due to an incoming storm, the barringtonia tour has been cancelled. Lots of tourists are disappointed and grumbling, and the girls feel dejected, too, but it is what it is. In want of something to do, Sayaka says the resort provides free games to play, and the other girls are game for a pajama party night. Homura says they ought to make the best of what they have, after all. Before that, though, Madoka spots the photographer in the crowd and goes to talk to her, where they both express their sadness over the canceled tour...but Madoka says they've found a way to make this night a great memory, too. The photographer smiles and chuckles at this, and then asks if Madoka and her friends would be available the next morning. The photographer explains there's a place she wants to show them, but the time isn't right just yet. She informs that they'll all need their swimsuits, too, but Madoka and company are more than ready for that, and Madoka goes to tell her friends about it. The next morning, the girls meet with the photographer, who guides them to a far-off, secret place. Once they weave their way there, they're met with the sight of many flowers floating in the waters. They are the blossoms of the same night-blooming flowers the tour was going to show them. At the end of the night, these flowers fall into the water and float to this location. The girls take in the stunning sight, hardly able to speak, until Nagisa pipes up that she wants to take this home with her, and Kyoko says that you can't take sights home! Still, Madoka kneels by the flowers in the water to admire them closely. The photographer asks to take a photo of her, and it's revealed that this was the special place the photographer and her old friend had wanted to meet for their last day together. The photographer mentions her friend was named Himari...and Madoka remembers where she heard that name from - she's the daughter of the old lady who had lost her hat! And just like that, the pieces fall into place, Madoka knows now that there's something she can only do here and now... With her friends' help, Madoka finds the hat granny, and inquires about Himari. The granny reiterates that Himari was her daughter ,and that the granny came here, in fact, in hopes of finding a place that Himari had been eager to visit with her friend...and Madoka introduces her to that very same friend. The two women have a heartfelt moment together, about how in the end, Himari had only wanted to see her best friend again. She had wanted that to her very last breath, for now and forever. In return, the photographer offers to take the granny to their sanctum, and expresses regrets over the stupid fight they'd had that had ripped their friendship apart. The granny, hearing this, is astonished, saying it wasn't an argument that tore them apart - Himari had never mentioned such a thing. Really, that very day, Himari's condition went sharply downhill. After moving to the hospital, the granny feels that Himari felt too ashamed to explain her condition to her friend - and perhaps simply didn't want to bring herself to say a final farewell. The photographer breaks down in tears over this - the tragedy, the catharsis - and the granny asks that the photographer no longer holds this against herself, to let go of this burden. They both thank Madoka for helping them meet, and for giving them both salvation. The girls spend the remaining days of their vacation having fun, until the day of their departure arrives. Madoka's friends run off to play the morning away, while Madoka spots the photographer one last time. The photographer managed to finish developing the photo she'd taken of Madoka at the flower pond, and hands it over. Has Madoka found the thing she can only do now, she asks? Absolutely, Madoka says - she's had so much fun with her friends, has seen many gorgeous sights, and met the granny and photographer, too, all of them precious and irreplaceable memories. But the thing she could only do here, of course, was to unite the granny and photographer and bring closure to what happened with Himari. It's a beautiful coincidence, the photographer remarks - that everyone instrumental to this meeting all happened to convene in the same place this summer. The photographer thanks Madoka again for a wonderful and special summer. Madoka says likewise - and thinks someday, she'll come back here just like the photographer to look back on the past. Madoka's friends call out to her - doesn't she want to swim before time runs out?! The photographer tells Madoka to get going, and so the latter does, ready to enjoy the day with her friends, wondering what thoughts and feelings she'll have as an adult when she comes back here again. |

Trivia
- Madoka owns many stuffed animals in her room.
- One of Madoka's stuffed animals resembles Lady from Disney's movie "Lady and the Tramp".
- Madoka loves cats like Homura.[8]
- Urobuchi made Junko a strong woman so Madoka would want to emulate her strength and courage.[31]
- Gen Urobuchi chose October 3 as Madoka's birthday, because that was the day when the ‘Mahou Shoujo Apocalypse Madoka☆Magica Project’ document was created.[32][33]
- The project was developed under the working title "Mahou Shoujo Mokushiroku Madoka☆Magica" ("Magical Girl Apocalypse Madoka☆Magica"), a reference to Revolutionary Girl Utena.
- There was a petition to change the official name of the NGC 6357 nebula to the "Madokami nebula".
- In her design concept she is described as a smart, ideal heroine. However, in the final series, she describes herself as "average".
- When she was younger, she had a pet myna bird.[1]
- On the cover of DA VINCI Magazine 2020 for October, Madoka is holding the book The Neverending Story while Iroha is holding Little Women.
- In Magia Record:
- Her magia, "Pluvia☆Magica", is Latin for "Magical rain."
- In her transformation, she can be seen as an adult. She looks similar to Ultimate Madoka, though without the pigtails.
- Her Doppel is based off of Kriemhild Gretchen's concept art from Madoka Portable. This form was seen in the middle of Kriemhild's body and might be her true body.
- Madoka's doppel is based off of Kriemhild Gretchen's concept art from Madoka Portable. This form was seen in the middle of Kriemhild's body and might be her true body.
- The Papa New Year's Memoria refers to a "yakuman". This is a particularly high-value hand in mahjong that is extremely difficult to achieve, akin to a royal flush.
- Her Kimono unit's Magia, Pluvia☆Neujahr, is a combination of the latin "Magical" and the german "New Year's Day".
- Madoka & Iroha might have been an unofficial early Anime unit. The art style of their in-battle sprite strongly resembles this of the official anime units and their second Magia is based on their Connect scene from the anime's second season.
- The shape their combined bows make in their second Magia attack resembles the symbols of Coordinators/Connect.
- The name of Madoka & Iroha's Magia, "Pluvia Futura", is a combination of Madoka's "Pluvia☆Magica" and Iroha's "Strada Futuro".
- Swimsuit Madoka's introduction video is unique in being one of the few to featured 3D/CGI animation, and the characters featured in it are exclusively Live2D models instead of being traditionally animated.
- Her Scene 0 transformation video is simultaneous with/continued in Mabayu Aki's transformation, and she appears twice in Madoka's:
- Mabayu is first seen briefly through a window into the room Madoka is swinging in.
- She is seen in the Holy Quintet group shot of them floating. While Madoka's background features the colorful circles, Mabayu is completely black.
- The film from Homura and Madoka's Scene 0 4 star Cards mirror each other.
Etymology
- The characters of her last name mean "deer" (鹿) and "eye"(目), respectively.
- Madoka could also mean "wish" or "ambition" or "flower".
- The name Madoka can be written with the character for "circle" or "round" in kanji (円) reflecting the cyclical nature of the Magical Girl-Witch Incubator relationship as well as the circular repetition of timelines that revolve around her. It could also be written with the character for "wish" or "ambition"; the connotations of that should be obvious. Her last name, Kaname, can also be read as "pivot" or "vital point", which is apt to say the least due to Homura's time-meddling making Madoka's existence the pivotal point of every timeline she creates.
